Maria Chiquita and João Bobo were serious about becoming farmers.
At night they dreamed of corn fields.
Of being roused by the rooster's call.
Of cutting fresh flowers.
And cooking on a fogão à lenha.
So they bought shiny new boots and set to work.
They picked and toiled all day long.
And then stood back and watched a sudden shower do away with their efforts.
No matter. They were still pretty sure they lived in God's Country (and that he had a sense of humor.)
